Frequently Asked Questions
What is cholesterol and what role does it play in heart health?
Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found within fats in the bloodstream
and in the body's cells. Cholesterol is transported within the body by two major
lipoprotein carriers called LDL (also known as "bad" cholesterol) and HDL
("good" cholesterol). LDL cholesterol promotes the buildup of fatty plaque
inside arteries, while HDL protects against plaque buildup. When LDL cholesterol
is too high it settles on the inside walls of blood vessels. As it builds up,
the blood vessels become clogged and the blood can't flow to the heart, brain
and other organs properly. When this happens, chances for heart attack and
stroke increase. In contrast, HDL cholesterol can help remove excess cholesterol
from the blood resulting in improved flow to these important organs.
How is cholesterol made by the body?
Scientists estimate that
80% of the body's cholesterol is made in the liver and the remaining 20% is
supplied to the body through diet. To a certain natural balance point,
cholesterol is essential for healthy hormone production and cell membrane
structure. This natural balance point is determined by a biochemical
relationship between the liver and an enzyme called HMG-COA reductase. The liver
creates cholesterol until the HMG-COA enzyme signals the body has enough and
thereby, inhibits the production of cholesterol in the liver. For some, this
internal regulatory system breaks-down, producing an excess amount of
cholesterol. For others, bad cholesterol intake via fatty foods can slow down
this natural, biofeedback system. Both result in unwanted, elevated cholesterol
levels in the blood.
What cholesterol levels are desirable?
In the US, total
cholesterol is a measure, in milligrams, of the total amount of cholesterol
present per deciliter of blood. For heart-health assessment purposes, total
cholesterol levels are defined as:
* Desirable <200mg/dL >
*
Borderline-High 200-239 mg/dL
* High >239 mg/dL
For every 2 percentage points above 200, your risk for cardiovascular disease
increases by 1 percent. So a measurement of 250 points means your risk is 25%
higher than average. According to the Center for Disease Control, at least HALF
of American adults (99.8 million people) have cholesterol levels above the
desired, normal 200 mg/dL level. People in the borderline-high range (estimated
60 million) may have no symptoms at all, yet they may harbor a silent time bomb
waiting to explode into serious heart issues. The most important way to know
your status is to get your cholesterol checked regularly.
What are the International units of measure for blood cholesterol?
Internationally, total cholesterol is a measure, in millimoles, of the
total amount of cholesterol present per liter of blood and is defined as:
Desirable <5.2 mmol/L >
Borderline-High 5.2 - 6.2 mmol/L
High
>6.2 mmol/L
How do I begin to change my "bad" cholesterol?
Lifestyle
modification. Improving the risk factors associated with chronic disease is a
big step in the right direction. Three of the major risk factors include: 1)
Lack of exercise - increasing your activity level can improve your natural
defense system, condition your heart and lungs and, in some people, may lead to
increased HDL levels. 2) Tobacco use - a major risk factor in heart disease and
has been shown to lower HDL "good" cholesterol levels in the body. 3) Poor
nutrition - fewer than 1/4 of US adults report eating the minimum recommended
amounts of fruits and vegetables daily. A heart healthy diet should include a
reduction of saturated fats and trans-fatty acids (found in meats and dairy
products) and hydrogenated fats (found in margarine and processed foods) and an
increase in the consumption of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
Are there particular instructions on how to take Choleste-Care?
Getting a jumpstart on heart health is important. Vemma recommends
taking 4 capsules with dinner for the first two weeks. Thereafter, 3 capsules
per day with dinner is recommended. Experience shows that Choleste-Care is most
effective when taken at night. For those who also supplement with the Neutral C+
CoQ10, it is recommended to take the Neutral C+ CoQ10 in the morning or
afternoon for maximum effectiveness.
Can I use Choleste-Care if I'm currently taking medication?
It
is always recommended to consult your health care professional before you take
this or any similar product. Particularly if you have any previous health
conditions or if you are pregnant or nursing.
